Community Service

The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it
-- Mother Teresa
Volunteering
At least once each semester, the brothers get together for a day of volunteering. Not only is this a way for the community to benefit from our large numbers, it is also a great excuse for us to get out and have fun together. Past projects we’ve participated in include the maintenance of a half mile section of the Charles River, and a joint effort with one of the MIT sororities to landscape an outdoor classroom for a school in Dorchester. We make sure people get served by us.

Philanthropy
This past year marked one of the greatest milestones in Sigma Nu’s community service history—the first annual Sausage-Fest. This on-campus fundraiser for testicular cancer research and treatment was completely coordinated and carried out by members of Sigma Nu. We raised money by grilling and selling hot dogs and brats to students and faculty during lunch, and by holding a mini hot dog eating contest.

Candidate Class
Community Service is a requirement every candidate class must fulfill before being considered for brotherhood in Sigma Nu. This brings out the leadership and organizational skills in every candidate, and it serves as one of the many opportunities candidates have to bond with each other before becoming brothers. Past candidate classes have taught courses during MIT Splash, and arranged a fundraiser for Toys For Tots.
