Why Greek?

Jordan Sorensen answers some common questions about Greek life and Sigma Nu

Why Greek?

"Being a part of a fraternity has provided an "automatic" social network, something that's a necessity at MIT. MIT can be a quirky school- all the students are intensely into their courses, and everyone here has huge ambitions. This is a great thing- you get a great education, you're surrounded by brilliant people, and you have amazing professors at your disposal. Sometimes, however, this can get to be a little much. Whenever I felt like a class was just too tough, I'd go straight to the upperclassmen at Sigma Nu- people who'd already taken the same classes- and ask for their help.

When you go home for Christmas and catch up with your old high school friends, you'll begin to realize how different MIT really is. You'll talk to your friends who went to "normal" colleges, and probably hear about how they party or play video games all day. To be sure, I wouldn't want to go to one of these schools- I'm paying for an education, and wouldn't mind learning a thing or two while I'm here. Fraternities at MIT provide the best of both worlds- you get an amazing education from MIT classes, but you also have a chance to socialize, hang out, and relax with your fraternity brothers.

Why Sigma Nu?

"The principle of fraternity is embodied by having close bonds with the people around you. The guys who live together in a fraternity spend a lot more time hanging out together than those who live dorms, so choosing the right fraternity is all about the people in it. For me, Sigma Nu was the obvious choice. I always felt relaxed hanging out with the Sigma Nu guys, and always felt like I fit in.

Another great benefit I didn't realize until after joining was Sigma Nu's location. When I first talked to my friends who'd stayed in dorms, they made me feel like Sigma Nu was pretty far away. After being at MIT a little while, though, I realized what a great thing being off campus really was. When you get home from a long day on campus, it's amazing to feel like you're not at school anymore- just being off campus can really relieve the stress of being at MIT. Plus, Sigma Nu is just blocks from everything that matters- theaters, Fenway, food, shopping- so just walking over to AMC to see a movie is no big deal, and you can go eat someplace new every night. I feel like I was really lucky to find a place like Sigma Nu- great guys, a great house, and a great location.

What does being a member mean to me?

"Being a member of Sigma Nu means having close bonds with my brothers. I'm always amazed by how well I've grown to know this group of guys in just a few short years, and I know that we'll continue to spend time together well beyond college."
